Gaining more influence and autonomy as a Hardware Engineer

Feb 04, 2015

Wide horizon or pinpoint focus?

gillrd hardware engineeringAs a Hardware Engineer there are, broadly speaking, two working environments available to you.

One is working for a large organisation where you are part of a comprehensive team developing a high volume product, which has a scheduled development spanning many months. Your involvement will concentrate on a small, closely defined element.

The second is to work for a smaller company, where you will be working as part of a compact, tightly-knit, multi-disciplined team developing a wide range of projects concurrently. The only limit to your influence in the projects development is your ambition.

There is not a good or bad option. Different individuals will have their preference for the environment that suits them the best.

Gill Research & Development fits into the second, smaller category. Working in a consultancy capacity for both internal Gill group customers and external clients, offers hardware engineers a diverse project range to engage in. Sensors and meteorological equipment are just a flavour of what you could be involved in.

Typically, our engineers can be working in hardware design using simulation, at component level, system level design, high and low level software and complete product lifecycle work, as well as the research, preparation and presentation of proposals. A key attribute is understanding the customers' needs and developing solutions based on those needs.

Being in a smaller organisation, our engineers are presented with the opportunity to work on a number of projects at the same time and they need to be comfortable in a dynamic, fast changing environment with an instinct to lead and innovate. Above all, the opportunity to influence the content and outputs of the project are substantial combined with a high degree of autonomy.

As any Hardware Engineer knows, a commercially successful and innovative product cannot be developed in isolation, so an engineer will be part of a multi-disciplinary team alongside, mechanical, software, research, testing and validation, sales, marketing and manufacturing.

With access to a wide range of testing and prototyping facilities, our engineers are encouraged to be hands-on in the innovation and development of solutions to project needs.

What does all this add up to?  If you want to be part of a dynamic, creative and innovative team where each day can bring new challenges and solutions and where your contribution and influence to the wider project outcome is encouraged across disciplines, then we may be the company for you.

If you want to be a Hardware engineer, or have skills in other suitable disciplines, where the boundaries of the job description are as flexible as you are and where your contribution and input is actively encouraged to deliver the most innovative solutions to customers, contact us for a chat or visit Careers.
