Alstom, a UK manufacturer of flagship passenger rail rolling stock, came to us needing a level switch solution to measure oil in their Pendolino 390 class passenger trains.
Alstom required a non-contact switch which would fit into the engine that would not jam or break, unlike the previously used float switches. Due to the consumer end-use of the application, reliability and durability were paramount to ensure that the solution would support the flagship trains and its service.
Gill R&D conducted research to utilise its existing capacitive technology, resulting in a superior replacement of the customer's previous sensor.
We developed technical drawings, CAD models and environmental testing include EMC, vibration and humidity testing, to ensure the solutions were suitable for use across the fleet and would meet the rail standard tests.
A reliable, solid-state prototype was manufactured using in-house facilities, providing Alstom with a highly reliable level switch for installation across their fleet of commercial trains
