Detector for sampling specific environmental factors

gill-rd-application-story-3.jpgA national military organisation identified the need for a specialist detector that would search a geographical area in a conflict zone for specific environmental factors indicating if other items of hazardous military equipment could be in operation.

Hand held and battery powered, the detector had to provide operational and detection reliability and certainty, whilst being packaged in a ruggedised housing to withstand the extreme physical environment it would be used in

The Challenge

As the device was being developed for an ongoing requirement, a rapid timescale was required for both the creation and delivery of the product. Coupled with a need for the device to be small enough to be hand held, it had to be light and optimise the human machine interface to ensure a simple and intuitive operation. Within this lightweight, ergonomic package it had to be robust and use technology that would provide confidence in its output functionality.

The Result

Working in close collaboration with the customer to define the specification and operating parameters of the device, concepts were quickly generated to define the overall package size and user interface, whilst at the same time refining and validating the detection technology capability. Working prototypes were created to test and refine the design and user interface, and for the customer to verify their original requirements were being met.

The customer utilised its own testing facilities and final deployment environment for successful validation and verification of the product before introduction.

In common with other Gill R&D projects involving collaboration with military organisations, the project was delivered on time within a restricted development window, and met the demanding specifications set by the customer.

With the benefits to the customer of reduced deployment and training costs, the user interface was tested and refined extensively, and the small production batch of detectors manufactured, assembled and tested by Gill R&D.
